Lulu Guequierre
Lulu Guequierre (b. 1999, USA) is a self-taught artist based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal and Berlin.
Guequierre’s artistic practice is rooted in markmaking in various media, from oil paint to graphite to charcoal. Intuition, emotion, and reflection drive their process as they conjure dynamic and often figurative scenes on canvas or paper. Their work begins with reading and writing; Guequierre collects literary fragments and snippets from daily life, overheard conversations, advertising slogans, strange idioms, and partial memories, letting these ephemera guide the work.
The result is dreamy, layered, colour-driven compositions, at times combining text and imagery, fleeting expressions and mystical symbols that draw from myth, music, spiritual iconography, pop culture, and personal experience.
Guequierre’s work is an homage to daily life, recognising the beauty and spiritual power of modern, quotidian experiences and relationships, as well as the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves and one another.
